Yemen Casualties Continue Rising Amid Latest Escalation
A WHO report issued Sunday said Yemen’s Health Emergency Operations Center recorded 809 new casualties between Sept. 19 and 26. The figure included 645 people injured and 164 deaths.
The latest figures raised the cumulative number of casualties recorded since Aug. 6 to 4,481, including 838 fatalities.
Lahj continues to record the highest number of casualties among Yemen’s conflict areas, the WHO said.
Al-Madharibah wa Ras Al-Arah and the Bab el-Mandeb coast registered the largest daily casualty figures on the two days for which detailed field data was available.
The area recorded 47 casualties on Sept. 21, including 18 deaths, followed by 34 casualties on Sept. 26.
Marib reported the next highest number of casualties, particularly in Al-Jubah and Sirwah, followed by Taiz, including At-Turbah, Maqbanah, Al-Ma’afer and Al-Mudhaffar.
Yemen has faced prolonged conflict since the Houthis seized control of Sanaa and several provinces in 2014. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 in support of the country’s internationally recognized government.
