Qatar Demands Iran Bear Responsibility for Its Attacks
Qatar's Foreign Ministry announced Wednesday that Doha had dispatched two identical letters in April to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the president of the Security Council, condemning Iranian strikes as a "blatant violation" of its sovereignty, a direct threat to its national security and territorial integrity, and a dangerous escalation imperiling broader regional stability.
The letters explicitly stated that Iran carries full international legal responsibility for the strikes, characterizing them as "unlawful acts" that obligate Tehran to provide financial compensation covering all losses and damages sustained by Qatar, according to the ministry.
Doha further charged that the attacks deliberately targeted civilian infrastructure, constituting grave violations of international humanitarian law — including the Geneva Conventions and universally recognized principles prohibiting military strikes against civilian populations.
Reinforcing its firm legal posture, Qatar declared it reserves the right to act under Article 51 of the UN Charter, pledging to deploy all measures necessary to safeguard its sovereignty, national security, and civilian residents.
The developments unfold against a backdrop of intensifying regional conflict. US President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran on Tuesday, describing Tehran's submitted framework as "workable." The declaration arrived less than two hours before the expiration of a deadline Trump had repeatedly extended, during which Iran faced demands to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or risk what he warned would be "the destruction of an entire civilization."
Hostilities in the region surged following a joint US-Israeli military offensive launched against Iran on February 28, which has since claimed more than 1,400 lives — among them former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran has since mounted retaliatory drone and missile campaigns against Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting American military installations, while simultaneously imposing severe restrictions on commercial shipping through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
