Saudi Arabia Intercepts Drones, Missiles

(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia announced on Saturday that its defense systems successfully stopped 23 unmanned aerial vehicles and three missiles that entered its airspace.

Posting on the US-based social media platform X, the Saudi Defense Ministry reported that two drones were intercepted and eliminated east of the capital, Riyadh.

The ministry further explained that 21 additional drones were shot down in the Empty Quarter desert after they attempted to strike the Shaybah oil field located in the kingdom’s southeastern region.

Officials also stated that three ballistic missiles aimed at Prince Sultan Air Base in Al-Kharj province, southeast of Riyadh, were intercepted and destroyed before reaching their target.

Authorities did not identify the origin of the drones or missiles, although the event occurred at the same time as Iranian attacks targeting locations across multiple Arab nations.

On Feb. 28, Iran fired missiles and deployed drones toward Israel and several Gulf states that host US military facilities, causing casualties in some areas and damaging civilian infrastructure such as ports and residential buildings.

Tehran says the attacks came in response to a US-Israeli military campaign against Iran that has killed hundreds of people, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and top military officials.
