Saudi FM Calls for End to Gaza Killings, Urges for Reconstruction
Speaking during a panel at the Munich Security Conference, Prince Faisal noted that the ceasefire had failed to halt fatalities and stressed the urgent need to stop the violence and begin rebuilding the heavily damaged enclave.
He also highlighted the importance of maintaining unity between Gaza and the West Bank, noting that stability in Gaza is essential for preserving Palestinian cohesion. The minister emphasized that Palestinian rights, including self-determination, must be addressed.
His remarks come amid rising tensions in the West Bank after Israel’s government approved measures aimed at altering the legal and civil framework there, including expanding enforcement powers into areas designated as A and B.
An Oct. 10 ceasefire ended Israel’s two-year war that began on Oct. 8, 2023. Palestinian authorities report that the conflict killed over 72,000 Palestinians, wounded more than 171,000, and caused widespread destruction affecting roughly 90% of civilian infrastructure. The UN estimates that reconstruction will cost about $70 billion.
Since the ceasefire, at least 591 Palestinians have been killed and over 1,578 injured in Israeli attacks, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
The 62nd Munich Security Conference, held Friday through Sunday under tight security, has been described by diplomats as taking place during the most turbulent period since the end of the Cold War, with escalating conflicts and uncertainty over the global order.
