US Greenlights Possible Military Sale to Saudi Arabia

(MENAFN) Washington has greenlit a massive $3 billion arms package to Saudi Arabia aimed at maintaining the Gulf kingdom's F-15 combat aircraft operations, according to official announcements released this week.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) disclosed Tuesday that the proposed Foreign Military Sale—encompassing F-15 maintenance capabilities and associated hardware—received mandatory certification before congressional notification procedures commenced.

According to the agency's official statement, the arms transfer advances American strategic interests by "improving the security of a Major non-NATO Ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in the Gulf Region."

The DSCA further emphasized that the equipment provision "will not alter the military balance in the region."

This authorization follows closely behind last week's State Department clearance of a separate $9 billion transaction involving Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement Missiles and complementary systems destined for Saudi Arabia.

The back-to-back approvals represent a combined $12 billion in potential American defense exports to the kingdom within days, signaling continued US commitment to bolstering Saudi military capabilities despite ongoing scrutiny of the bilateral defense relationship.

Congressional lawmakers now have the authority to review or potentially block the proposed sale during a designated notification period.
