US Negotiators in Gaza Talks Feel “Betrayed” After Attack on Qatar

(MENAFN) Senior negotiators representing US President Donald Trump in the Gaza peace discussions revealed they experienced a sense of “betrayal” following an Israeli airstrike targeting Qatar amid ongoing mediation efforts.

Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, along with Steve Witkoff, the US special envoy to the Middle East, played pivotal roles in the president’s “dealmaking consortium” aimed at securing a ceasefire and arranging a hostage swap.

Both participated in negotiations held in Egypt in early October, a few weeks after the Israeli strike on Doha, which resulted in multiple casualties and almost disrupted the peace process.

In a Friday interview broadcast, Witkoff recounted that he became aware of the airstrike the morning after it happened.

He remarked, “I think both Jared and I felt, I just feel we felt a little bit betrayed,” during the conversation with the show’s host.

He further explained the strike’s consequences, noting its “metastasizing effect” due to Qatar’s crucial role in the talks, alongside Egypt and Turkey.

Witkoff pointed out that the trust of the Qataris was lost, causing Hamas to operate covertly, making communication extremely challenging.

Qatar, a longstanding US ally and mediator in the Gaza ceasefire, condemned the Israeli strike by labeling it “state terrorism.”

President Trump, who expressed support for Doha, later clarified that the attack was authorized exclusively by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and that the White House had received the information too late to take any preventive action.
